Software Systems Developer (Early Career)

We are seeking a motivated Software Systems Engineer to support software testing and quality assurance for multiple national security software projects. We develop and support a variety of custom software applications that are used in various aspects of National Defense and Nuclear Incident Response.
Our applications include scientific modeling, information management, decision support, image analysis, 3D modeling and mapping, machine learning, and more. The successful candidate will partner with other engineers and scientists at the Laboratory to build software tools that enable emergency responders and analysts to detect, assess, and counter threats from a nuclear incident or attack.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Learn our codebase and Agile development process
  • Create and perform test plans
  • Maintain Gitlab projects
  • Produce Software Documentation
  • Build and deliver software training
  • Learn technical coding skills


Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems Management, Computer Science, or other relevant field; OR no degree and 8 years' relevant experience
  • Experience with object-oriented programming for scientific applications
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance


Qualifications We Desire

Proficiency with software application development
  • Experience with software quality control and testing including unit and end-to-end testing
  • Experience with Gitlab
  • Willingness to learn how to write automated tests for the software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word
  • Willingness to learn technical coding skills
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • Active DOE Clearance (Q/L)

The Critical Software Systems department develops software for national security applications including nuclear incident response, critical infrastructure analysis, nuclear weapons, and cybersecurity. We partner with customers to identify and analyze their needs and translate those needs into delivered systems. Our process for high-value and user-centered software uses repeatable standards-based approaches - iterative, agile, and traditional - for requirement analysis, software design, development, and deployment.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
