Assistant Manager Fleet Distribution

Primary Purpose:
Oversees the fulfilment of empty railcar requests for one or more railcar fleets, working closely with several stakeholders, including Operations, Mechanical, Marketing and other players in the industry (railroads, TTX, Railinc)
Principal Duties:
  • Oversees automated movement of empty railcars to fulfil customer requests across one or more railcar fleets (car types)
  • Proactively identifies pipeline management challenges flagged by empty railcar distribution systems and works to resolve/minimize issues
  • Proactively communicates empty railcar availability challenges to relevant stakeholders and leverages available systems and processes in doing so
  • Proactively manages dwell at intermediate terminals and loading/unloading points as to protect velocity and utilization
  • Works closely with Field Operations and other stakeholders on expediting railcars in abnormal dwell situations
  • Develops and executes contingency plans in abnormal operating conditions (e.g. plant shutdowns), leveraging available systems
  • Works with peers in Fleet Planning and Optimization on enhancements to systems that support empty railcar distribution
  • Leverages available tools to monitor dwell and other operational challenges, proactively identifies process improvement opportunities
  • Works with internal stakeholders on resolving data-related challenges that may impact railcar movement and visibility thereof
  • Directs movement of applicable railcars for non-revenue purposes, including maintenance, repair program and scrapping
  • Works with other railroads, industry organizations (TTX, Railinc, etc.) on weekly distribution of shared equipment pools and various industry initiatives

Job Related Experience:
Minimum Level: New/Recent Grad
Preferred Level: Bachelor's Degree (BA, BS)
Preferred Majors: Business Administration, Transportation and Logistics, Industrial Engineering
Technical Skills:
  • Basic familiarity with SQL preferred
  • Spotfire, Tableau or similar interfaces for data analysis
  • Understanding of basic logistics
